Stage 2: Engagement

Give people a reason to stay interested

What engagement actually means

Getting noticed is only the start. Engagement is what happens after someone first finds you but before they are ready to buy. This stage is about staying on their radar in a way that feels useful, not relentless. That might be through LinkedIn, newsletters, blogs, emails, follow-ups, or simply having a better system for keeping track of the people who have already shown an interest.

A lot of small businesses lose potential work here because they focus all their energy on getting noticed, then assume interested people will remember to come back. Often they don’t.

Why this stage actually matters

Most people are not ready to buy the first time they come across you. They might like what you do, save a post, look at your website, or have a conversation with you, then disappear back into their own lives. That does not necessarily mean they were not interested. It often means they were not ready yet.

The problem comes when there is no easy way to stay in touch with them. Then you are constantly trying to find brand new people instead of making more of the interest you have already created.

Signs engagement might need attention

  • People seem interested then disappear
  • You have no real follow-up system
  • You know you should email people, but rarely do
  • Your blog or newsletter keep slipping down the list
  • You post when inspiration strikes, then vanish for a while
  • Potential clients are sitting in old emails, spreadsheets of DMs
  • You're creating content without an idea of what it needs to do
  • People forget about you between conversations
  • You are constantly starting from scratch with new leads

What good looks like

You do not need to be constantly visible. You just need a few reliable ways to stay connected with people who are already interested in what you do.

For a neurodivergent business owner, that usually means finding systems that do not rely on you remembering everything manually or producing endless content on a perfect schedule. A simple CRM, a manageable content plan, a newsletter you can actually keep up with, or a few sensible follow-up habits can make a huge difference.
